Is the CV Becoming Obsolete?

14/09/2026

AI can now transform an ordinary CV into a polished application in seconds. It can match job descriptions, improve wording and highlight the keywords employers are looking for.

But there’s a problem.

A great CV doesn’t necessarily mean a great candidate.

The CV should be the starting point of the recruitment process, not the evidence that someone can actually do the job.

Instead of simply asking candidates to talk through their CV, employers should explore the evidence behind their achievements.

What was the problem? What did they personally do? What decisions did they make? What changed as a result? What went wrong, and what did they learn?

These conversations reveal much more than a list of responsibilities.

Recruiters and employers should also look at motivation, judgement, problem-solving and potential. Where appropriate, work samples, realistic scenarios and structured interviews can provide valuable insight into genuine capability.

AI isn’t necessarily something employers should fear. If candidates will use AI in their jobs, understanding how they use it can actually become part of the assessment.

The key is to look beyond the polish.

At Recruitment Chief, we don’t simply send clients CVs. We speak with candidates, challenge their experience, understand their motivations and provide context beyond what is written on the page.

Because clients don’t employ CVs.

They employ people.
